Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise at the age of an infant. The aunt was on during the night shifts as a nursing assistant so she could indulge her passion for art literature and theater throughout the day. DuVernay became enamored with the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt showed it to DuVernay. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the arts can serve to engage people. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially conscious and taught the importance of speaking up through art. DuVernay was a resident of Compton during the majority of her life, but was able to spend summers with her extended family members in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father was awed by the historical civil rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town of Selma Alabama. The summers she spent in Alabama's Selma would be the inspiration for her later a film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English as well as African American study. DuVernay began producing in broadcast journalism when she was still in university. She began her career as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned an assignment to watch the house and examining the waste from one of the juries. Her disappointment was evident in her journalistic duties and decided to change to the field of public relations. DuVernay began her career as a junior publicity assistant at a small film studio shortly after she graduated from college. She started The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. In addition to PR, the company has launched lifestyle networks and promotions, like The Urban Beauty Collective. She is a performer, popularly known for American Experience (1987) and A More Perfect Union (2009). Autumn was Rose in A More Perfect Union as well as Anna Payne from American Experience.
